The Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children's Book Awards, valued at $6,000 each, recognize excellence in Canadian children's literature in two categories: children's picture book and young adult/middle reader.

Here are this year's winners:

Proud as a Peacock, Brave as a Lion by Jane Barclay

Summary: Much has been written about war and remembrance, but very little of it has been for young children. As questions come from a young grandchild, his grandpa talks about how, as a very young man, he was as proud as a peacock in uniform, busy as a beaver on his Atlantic crossing, and brave as a lion charging into battle. Soon, the old man’s room is filled with an imaginary menagerie as the child thinks about different aspects of wartime.

Vanishing Girl: The Boy Sherlock Holmes, His Third Case by Shane Peacock

Summary: When a wealthy young girl vanishes as if by magic in Hyde Park, Sherlock is once again driven to prove himself. In a heart-stopping race against time, an innocent boy’s survival depends on Sherlock’s ability to solve the mysterious puzzle of the Vanishing Girl. As complex as the maze that protects the missing girl’s hiding place, this case takes Sherlock racing to the countryside, the coast, and into the lair of a menagerie of exotic, dangerous creatures.

Princess Tales!

Have you ever wanted to live in a castle, wear beautiful dresses, have a prince in shining armour at your command? Being a princess may sound like fun, but sometimes it isn't always that easy! In fact, princesses usually have to work very hard to get their way. Check out these great books (and a DVD) involving the adventures of princesses!

Ella Enchanted – Gail Carson Levine
Ella was cursed by a fairy. She must obey every command that is asked of her. And her life become more difficult after her father remarries and she gains a stepmother and two stepsisters. So, Ella sets off on a quest to find her fairy godmother and reverse the curse. She is joined by a handsome prince, and so the story of Cinderella is retold in a way that you will not forget!

Once Upon a Marigold – Jean Ferris
A young inventor, named Christian, was raised since childhood by a loveable, pack-rat troll in the forest. He is perfectly content with his life, other than a lack of friends. Eventually, he begins sending letters by pigeon to a girl from the castle across river, who turns out to be the beautiful and intelligent, yet cursed and untouchable Princess Marigold. Their friendship brings them into an adventure together which causes them to discover a plot to overthrow the Marigold’s father, the King.

A Little Princess – Frances Hodgson Burnett
When Sara is sent to a girl’s school in London, she quickly gains the title of “the Little Princess” because of her beautiful dresses and many toys and fancy rooms. But, after her father disappears somewhere in India, she goes from being a princess to a servant. Sara’s true character becomes clear as she continues to hope and search for any sign of her beloved father.

Goose Chase
– Patricia Kindl
When an every-day goose girl suddenly becomes a beautiful and wealthy princess, Alexandria discovers life doesn’t become any easier! Instead, she founds herself in more difficult situations, what with being locked in a tower and fought over by a cruel king and a seemingly stupid prince. She decides that running away is the only option; however, that gets her into her biggest trouble yet!

The Princess Test
– Gail Carson Levine
This short story is a humorous retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's “The Princess and the Pea.” A blacksmith’s daughter, Lorelei, has to attempt to pass many crazy tests to prove that she is a real princess in order to marry her love, Prince Nicholas. It is a part of the Princess Tales Series.

Ella’s Big Chance: a Fairy Tale Retold
– Shirley Hughes
This beautiful picture book, set in the 1920’s Jazz Era, is another wonderful retelling of Cinderella. Be prepared for amazing pictures, a unforgettable princess, and an unusual ending!

Princess Diaries (DVD)
“Mia Thermopolis is a bright but terribly shy and gawky teenager whose goal in life is to survive each school day with a minimum of attention and embarrassment. Unfortunately, her wish to be invisible is thwarted when her estranged grandmother arrives and delivers the shocking news that she's a real-life princess -- and heir to the throne of Genovia! Furious and incredulous, the reluctant royal agrees to take "princess lessons" and make the biggest decision of her life -- in three weeks. And so begins a comical-transformation towards poise and princess-ness when she finds herself in the middle of a media storm, jealous schoolmates and a plot to take over her country!”

The Vancouver Olympics are nearly here! Catch up on your knowledge of the history of the Games by reading the “Eyewitness” book Olympics by Chris Oxlade. Younger children may enjoy Olympics, a colourful picture book by B.G. Hennessy. The popular “Magic Tree House” series has Jack

and Annie attending the Ancient Greek Games in Hour of the Olympics. A
companion book, Ancient Greece and the Olympics by Mary Pope Osborne has lots of useful and fascinating information. Roy MacGregor’s Screech Owls hockey team finds danger and excitement in Murder at the Winter Games.

One of the most popular sports at the last Winter Games was snowboarding. With Canadian athletes once more ranked at the top, it is certain to be a favourite sport in Vancouver too. Extreme Snowboarding by Bobbie Kalman and Kelley MacAulay captures the flair and dazzle of this winter sport.

One of the most exciting contests will probably be the Women’s Hockey games. Hayley Wickenheiser: Born to Play by Elizabeth Etue looks at the life of Canada’s star player.

For up to the minute information, go to the official Vancouver Olympics website http://www.vancouver2010.com/ . It has everything from dates and times of competitions, lots of photos and videos, to lists of athletes and sports. There is also a special kids section where you can meet the Olympic mascots, play games, find colouring sheets and much more. http://www.vancouver2010.com/mascot/en/meet.php

The motto for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games is “With Glowing Hearts”. Let the Games begin!
