Queen City Comics

The Queen City Comics Festival is coming up this weekend, and the program is on the web. Check out the 11:00 AM session on Saturday:

Janet Moleski (U. of Regina) Unhappily Ever After: Fairy Tales’ Dark Resurrection in Bill Willingham’s Fables.
Carlien Lavigne (Red Deer College) “Buffy the Lesbian Separatist”: Cinnamon, Sex and Gender in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8.

A joint talk on two of my favourite series! Yay!

The Regina Public Library is proud to be one of the many community partners involved in the upcoming Queen City Comics Conference and Festival, May 2nd at the old UofR College Building, College and Scarth. The conference will feature academic papers on comics and graphic novels, displays and other fun events. Part of this event is a comics creation contest open to all ages. One of the rules is that the story must take place in Regina. For more information, click here. The contest closes on March 30th.

Comic Craze Part 2

I just visited the comic craze exhibit at the Dunlop Art Gallery (inside Central Library), and is it ever cool! There are "trees" sprinkled around the room with little nooks holding graphic novels and comic books, and there is a sitting area for relaxing and reading. Some of the trees are even suspended from the roof, so they sway slightly, giving the room the feel of a real forest.

If you want to create some comics yourself, the Dunlop is also going to have a comic jam on Saturday, April 5th from 11:00am to 3:00pm. Call 777-6144 for more information.

Upcoming Exhibit

The Library's own Dunlop Art Gallery is going to have an exhibit called "Comic Craze" from March 14th to May 11th. It will be in the Central Library's gallery, and it will demonstrate the importance of Canadian comic books, as well as feature over four hundred books. Entrance into the gallery is free, so make sure you come out to see it!
