Zine Tips

This is a little off topic, but a good site to visit for all things zine is called Photocopied Heart. It has discussion about distros, titles, tips on creating zines and festival news. So if you are interested in zines, whether reading them or creating them, this is probably a good place to go for more information.

I'm a Zine Machine

Okay, so I'm not really a zine machine, but I like rhyming, so I went with it anyway.

The library has a collection of zines that is housed at the Central Library in the magazine collection. Zines are independently published works that deal with different topics (politics, poetry, life reflections, cooking - anything goes). The beauty of our collection is that you can sign out the zines on a three week loan, and they are in the catalogue, so you can browse them from home on your computer.

One zine that really stands out for me is called Tomatoes and Other Stories. It is a zine that is made up of short stories about relationships and life experiences told in comic form. I love the drawings, and anyone who has ever worked retail will relate to the first story.

Zine Comics

Caravan Commix by Jonah and Dakota McFadzean is now in the library catalogue, so put a hold on it, and get it brought to any library branch in the city. We also have Valuable Comics, a comic made up of work by local artists and organized by Shawn McLeod and Darcy Zink, in the catalogue too. These two works are part of the library's expanding zine collection, and if you keyword search "zine," you will see the zines we have at Central Library. One thing to note: when the library has different volumes of a zine series, you will need to get the hold placed by a library staff member to read a particular issue. Call 777-6120 to get a hold placed.
