100 Lovers , Devotchka 2011

For more than a decade, DeVotchKa has melded its influences from Eastern European wedding bands to Norteno ballads into an authentic and totally original blend of popular music. The band s haunting, romantic sound evokes timeless images, attracting thousands of fans to their sold-out live shows. DeVotchKa s sound has proved particularly attractive to filmmakers, who have used DeVotchka songs to score countless films and commercials, most famously Little Miss Sunshine, for which they received a Grammy nod. With the release of the band's fifth album, 100 Lovers, the band returns to the epic settings of the Arizona desert with producer Craig Schumacher (Calexico, Neko Case) to create a new collection of
haunting stories, with songs like The Man From San Sebastian delivering on their intriguing titles with enigmatic lyrics and cinematic soundscapes.(ANTI)

Several Shades of Why , J Mascis 2011

2011 solo album from the Dinosaur Jr. mainman. Nearly all acoustic Several Shades Of Why was created with the help of a few friends. Notable amongst them are Kurt Vile, Sophie Trudeau (A Silver Mount Zion), Kurt Fedora (long-time collusionist), Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene), Ben Bridwell (Band Of Horses), Pall Jenkins (Black Heart Procession), Matt Valentine (The Golden Road), and Suzanne Thorpe (Wounded Knees). Together in small mutable groupings, they conjure up classic sounds ranging from English-tinged Folk to drifty, West Coast-style singer/songwriterism. But every track, every note even, bears that distinct Mascis watermark, both in the shape of the tunes and the glorious rasp of the vocals. Ten brilliant tunes that quietly grow and expand until they fill your brain with the purest pleasure.(Sub Pop)

Blood Pressures , The Kills 2011

The Kills, UK/US duo of Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart, release Blood Pressures, the highly anticipated follow-up to their critically acclaimed third album, Midnight Boom. This album keeps their basic sound intact searing guitars, driving rhythms and sexually charged lyrical savvy. The 11 tracks on Blood Pressures find The Kills embracing a fuller sound; there is heavier instrumentation and layered, huge-sounding harmonies with Jamie and Alison uniting in their trademark singsong vocal style over tom heavy primitive beats.(Domino)

The King of Limbs , Radiohead 2011

2011 release, the eighth album from the enormously successful and influential British band. As usual, the album was produced by longtime co-hort Nigel Godrich. Recorded on and off throughout 2010, the album is a cohesive collection of songs that were laid down by the band in a more relaxed fashion than their ambitious In Rainbows long-player. The album's title refers to an oak tree in Wiltshire's Savernake Forest, thought to be 1,000 years old.(Tbd Records)

Endgame , Rise Against 2011

Limited edition pressing. 2011 album from the Chicago-based Punk act. The lyrics of the album touch on real world events, such as Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. According to Mcllrath, although the lyrics discuss grim topics, they actually take on a positive view and were written from the perspective of: 'What if the place on the other side of this transition is a place we'd all rather be living in?' Mcllrath tweeted a clarifying message stating that the record is not a concept record and, fret not, has absolutely nothing to do with the Dixie Chicks. The first single from the album is 'Help Is On The Way'. (Geffen Records)

The King is Dead , Decemberists 2011

The Decemberists have announced their new album The King Is Dead (Capitol Records, EMI). The album--a set of 10 concise, country-based songs--marks a deliberate turn towards simplicity after the band's wildly ambitious and widely acclaimed 2009 song-cycle The Hazards of Love. Produced once again by Tucker Martine, The King Is Dead features special guest appearances by Americana luminary Gillian Welch on seven tracks and legendary R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck on three tracks.

The King Is Dead showcases the ways in which The Decemberists--Colin Meloy, Chris Funk, Jenny Conlee, Nate Query, and John Moen--sound just as glorious in simple, stripped-down compositions as they do on the elaborate structures that have defined their work for years. (Capitol)

Vices & Virtues , Panic at the Disco 2011

Panic! At The Disco, the platinum-selling and Grammy-nominated group from Las Vegas, NV, is back and in better shape than ever with their hugely anticipated third studio album, Vices & Virtues. Two members lighter, the group is looking to stave off rumors of their disbanding by showing the world they are very much in the picture, and ready to take the world on once again. Based on the energy and response from their sold-out album preview show in New York, it seems Panic! is going to do just that.

Vices & Virtues pushes the classic Panic! sound to new heights, capturing the glory of A Fever You Can't Sweat Out all the while securing their spot with a new generation of fans. (Decaydance)

Eureka , Mother Mother 2011

EUREKA, the third studio album from Canadian avante pop quintet MOTHER MOTHER, is the band's most tenacious and undaunted record to date. Slated for a Last Gang Records worldwide release on March 15, 2011, EUREKA offers up eccentric, hook laden pop-meets-rock songs housed in creative arrangements with clever lyrics and intricate harmonies. Produced by Mother Mother's own Ryan Guldemond and mixed by Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Franz Ferdinand, Elvis Costello), the 12 new tracks that comprise the album surpass their predecessors with a greater sense of cohesion, exuberance and overall sonic depth. "The Stand," EUREKA's incredibly addictive lead off single is a tale of a "misanthrope who corrupts the minds of two young school girls" as described by Ryan, who wrote most of the song in his head as a "silly rap style thing to bide time in transit". Guldemond, the group's chief songwriter and front man describes the album as "a vivid depiction of where the band's at right now, which is the height of our musicianship, song writing and strength as collaborators." Different Gear, Still Speeding
, Beady Eye 2011

2011 debut album from this band made up of Liam Gallagher, Gem Archer and Andy Bell from Oasis. Different Gear, Still Speeding features 13 brand new songs written by the band and recorded at RAK Studios in autumn 2010 with producer Steve Lillywhite. Beady Eye is raw Rock 'n' Roll one minute, and classic Pop the next from the raucous Jerry Lee Lewis and Stones inspired "Bring The Light" to the Merseybeat wonder of "For Anyone," to the stomping T-Rex glam of "The Roller" to the pounding "Millionaire" and "Four Letter Word." It sounds like a debut record by a band just starting out with a huge appetite for music...and the results are nothing short of astonishing. (Dangerbird)

Bitte Orca, Dirty Projectors 2009

The follow-up to 2007's critically acclaimed and Domino debut "Rise Above". Their fifth release is a big rock album by design. Its idiosyncratic and sincere take on popular music is reminiscent of David Byrne with whom Dirty Projectors collaborated on "Knotty Pine" for the 2009 compilation "Dark Was The Night". In many ways, group leader David Longstreth could be seen as this generation's answer to Byrne, a distinctive torchbearer of labyrinthine song arrangements that go down easy. Amazon
