Rob Vanstone's West Riders Best Lecture

On November 26th, 1966, the Saskatchewan Roughrider`s beat their Ottawa rivals 29-14 to win their first Grey Cup. Leader-Post sports writer Rob Vanstone conducted 150 interviews and spent over 1,000 hours (some at RPL`s Prairie History Room) researching the story of this historic game. West Riders Best tells the stories of the people on that championship team, but also describes life in Regina in those more innocent times.

Rob will talk about his book and answer any questions you may have at an upcoming talk he will be giving on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at the RPL Film Theatre, Central Library from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Copies or the book will be available for purchase.

Pre-registration is not required.

Can't make the presentation to purchase a copy? Not to worry. The library has ordered several copies for you to borrow. Click on the link to place a hold on Rob's book.

Upcoming Author Reading

You are invited to attend the Mary-Ann Kirkby author reading for Monday, June 2, 2008 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm in the RPL Film Theatre, Central Library.

When Mary-Ann Kirkby was a child, her parents left a Hutterite colony to start a new life. Overnight, the family was thrust into a society they did not understand and which knew little of their unique culture. Mary-Ann embarks on a mission to reinvent herself, denying her heritage in order to fit in with her peers. Her book details her painful and often humourous attempts to adapt to popular culture as she comes to terms with the heart-breaking circumstances that led her family to leave community life.

I Am Hutterite takes us inside Fairholme Colony where Mary-Ann Kirkby spent the first ten years of her life. Her intimate portrait of Hutterian people opens a window on a closed community and reveals a way of life that seems extraordinary to the outside world.

Pre-registration is not required.
