Additional Information

Part of RPL's Metis Culture Series

Tekeyla Friday has been a performing puppeteer for over twenty years. She was born and raised on Treaty 4 territory. She was part of Local 12 Métis Nation in her hometown of Maple Creek, SK. When she moved to Swift Current, she became the Vice President of Local 34 Métis Nation. Her grandparents and mom tried to hang on to fragments of the Métis culture such as jigging, fiddling, making of Bannock, and oral storytelling. Many aspects of the Métis heritage and culture were replaced by settlers’ culture such as the Michief language, beading, sash weaving, and many other cultural traits.
