Let the children choose!
Did you know that according to Scholastic’s Kids & Family Reading Report (Canadian Edition), 47% of kids have trouble finding books that they like, but 94% of kids agree that their favourite books are ones that they have picked out themselves? Kids need to be empowered to choose their reading materials, but at the same time, they may need a bit of guidance in how to find books that interest them.
After reading this, I immediately thought of the Willow Awards, Saskatchewan’s Young Readers’ Choice Awards. The Willow Awards creates shortlists of ten titles for three age groups, and then encourages children and teens to read the books and vote on a winner. The books will appeal to a variety of interests and reading levels, and the award empowers children and teens to vote for the winning titles. As an added benefit, all of the titles are Canadian.
You can borrow the Willow Award nominees at Regina Public Library, and all of our locations are voting stations for the Willow Awards, so be sure to get the children or teens in your life to enter their votes by March 27th.
