Artist talk and reception: Saturday, June 11, 1:00-3:00 pm

Kingdom focuses on the varied relationships that human beings have with other animal species. Comprised of works by four Northern artists, three Indigenous and one settler, the exhibition investigates Indigenous and non-Indigenous systems, values, and connections to the animal world.  Our corporeal and spiritual engagement with other species is dependent on our cultural understanding of the relationship between humans and the rest of the animal “kingdom,” and these engagements in turn shape culture.  Works in the exhibition unsettle distinctions between “nature” and “culture,” “human” and “animal” and question the hierarchical, colonialist, and patriarchal structures existent in the notion of the animal “kingdom.”
