Breathing Room | Online

Exhibition runs from August 30 to December 30, 2020

Additional Information

Breathing Room | Online is an audiovisual artwork that employs javascript libraries for WebAudio and WebGL to generate colour-field/afterimage sequences in parallel with sound fields of shifting harmonics. There are two iterations: the audio for iteration one that targets desktop platforms is generated using an online synthesizer coded on Tone.js; iteration two targets both mobile and desktop platforms using phasing loops that are encoded for binaural surround sound.

Both iterations employ the same algorithm for the generative visuals; colour fields continually remake themselves in compositions that emerge and fade away, leaving afterimages that float into the white canvas.

Breathing Room | Online creates an invisible and silent Z space populated with countless visual fields and audio compositions. As the generative program runs this space expands; audiovisual events appear as living presences that oscillate between possibility and contingency.

Laura Kavanaugh and Ian Birse (aka Instant Places): Biography

Laura Kavanaugh and Ian Birse create interactive audiovisual performances and generative installation works for galleries and online platforms, using constantly-evolving hardware/software systems that integrate physical and virtual image and sound sources, touch-sensitive interfaces, and algorithmic responses from handmade software instruments. Their Instant Places collaboration  has been a central focus for over 20 years: since 1997 they have realized performances, installations, and telematic works on location across the Americas, Europe, Japan, and Australia.
