Together, we’ll unpack the difference between tropes and hooks, examine how they attract readers, and discover how the “constraints” of genre actually spark endless originality and variation. Finally, we’ll explore how mastering your tropes and hooks doesn’t just reel in readers—it catches the attention of editors and publishers, too.

Presenter Information:

Ev Bishop is the 2026 RPL Writer in Residence. 

Ev is an award-winning, USA Today bestselling author of more than twenty novels. She's best known for small-town contemporary romance and women's fiction, including her River's Sigh B&B series. She also writes under the pen name Toni Sheridan. A columnist for almost twenty years with the Terrace Standard, she's published numerous articles, essays, short stories, and poems.  

Passionate about all things craft, story, and writing-life related, Ev will offer workshops and one-on-one writing advice for all ages.
