Additional Information

Tune in now to 91.3FM CJTR.

Every Saturday at 3 PM in September, CJTR, Dunlop Art Gallery (Regina) and YYZ Artist Outlet (Toronto) present a series of shows hosted by Glasgow-based artist Josh Thorpe, designed to slow down and attend to unusual music of diverse types. We will listen to strange sounds and talk about the things that are difficult to talk about in experimental music. For example, the subtle and nuanced detail of the character of sound, the meaning of it, its affect, its force, its impact on us, what it calls to mind, the interaction of elements, how it is made... Also, we are interested in experimental music as a political or ethical place to visit, as a psychological space, what is it to be involved in something 'unpopular' like this.

On September 4, Josh will be in discussion with Martin Arnold.

Martin Arnold is a composer and performer of music, a writer and a teacher based in Toronto. Martin’s compositions have been played nationally and internationally and he is an active member of Toronto’s improvisation and experimental jazz/roots/rock communities performing on live electronics, banjo, melodica, and electric guitar. In particular, he has played guitar in the Ryan Driver Quartet/Quintet/Sextet for over 21 years. Martin lectures in the Department of Cultural Studies at Trent University in Peterborough, ON.

Josh Thorpe is an artist, musician, and writer based in Glasgow, Scotland. Thorpe has released two albums of songs (Love & Weather, 2021; Scrappy Art Rock You Can Dance To, 2018) and one album of experimental music (Flocklight, 2005). Thorpe recently launched Unusual Music Exchange, an online forum for unusual music.

Thorpe's paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, installations, and public works have shown internationally at venues such as David Roberts Art Foundation, London; 3A Gallery, New York; Power Plant, Toronto; CSA Space, Vancouver; Museo Napoleonico, Rome; and Open City, Lublin, Poland. In 2011 Thorpe was one of five artists nominated to the Sobey Art Award Ontario list and one of three finalists for the Toronto Friends of the Visual Arts Artist Award. He is also the author of Dan Graham Pavilions: A Guide, published by Art Metropole, The Unexpected, published by Swimmers Group. Thorpe has worked as a tutor and lecturer at OCAD U, University of Toronto, Glasgow Caledonian University, Glasgow School of Art, and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
