Bear Witness: Brave Step
Additional Information
Bear Witness: Brave Step
Curated by Blair Fornwald, Assistant Curator
April 2 to June 29, 2016
Central Mediatheque
In response to guest curator Leena Minifie’s When Raven Met Spider, Dunlop Mediatheque hosts Brave Step, a video and musical remix of Bravestarr, a 1980s animated space western taking place in the 23rd century on the planet New Texas, and featuring a Native American superhero protagonist. Brave Step’s video remix is by Cayuga artist Bear Witness, with music by Indigenous Producer/DJ crew, A Tribe Called Red, founded in 2008 by DJ Frame, DJ NDN and Bear Witness. In reviving the hero Marshal Bravestarr, Bear Witness and A Tribe Called Red claim visual sovereignty over Indigenous representation and imagined Indigenous futures.
