Michele Sereda’s vision was to introduce her Belgian friends from De Propere Fanfare to a disparate group of Regina dancers, musicians, performers, visual artists, and clowns. Through a whiz-bang series of workshops and collaborations, this unlikely group of artists promises to create an outrageous piece of processional performance to be presented at the 2015 Cathedral Village Arts Festival. This Picnic Concert and Performance Parade is a heartfelt homage to the wildly collaborative projects that Michele Sereda presented to Regina audiences for over twenty years. It’s going to be bold, loud, inventive, and absurd in a manner befitting Michele’s wonderful life as an artist. We like to think of it as a loving extension of her memorial celebration, as we pay tribute to the sage and the foolish, the sacred and the profane, the sublime and the ridiculous. It’s a silly love song to our dear friend Michele.
De Propere Fanfare, based in Ghent, Belgium, is a community arts collective where the making of street performance brings disparate communities together in a space to share and understand each other through impromptu performance creations. De Propere Fanfare has performed more than 200 concerts and parades across Europe at neighbourhood festivals, parades, and events of all shapes and sizes. Their goal is to collaborate, play and create with communities in which they find themselves – and they are coming to Regina. Arriving in early May, three of the founding members of De Propere Fanfare, (Ries de Vuyst, Miranda Dieleman and Koen de Ruyck ) will begin work immediately to devise an original outdoor spectacle in collaboration with a large team of Regina artists, consisting of over one hundred musicians, singers, dancers, actors, clowns and performance creatures to create an absurd orchestra of accordions, violins, trumpets, tubas, saxophones, mandolins, ukuleles, and countless instruments of percussion.
