One of a younger generation of Saskatchewan artists who pursues a modernist idiom, Saskatoon painter Jonathan Forrest consistently explores the subtleties of process and material in large-scale, colourful abstract paintings. The work embodies a modernistic aesthetic; they look like the colour-field paintings of Morris Louis or Helen Frankenthaler or, closer to home, the 1960s work of Kenneth Lochhead or William Perehudoff. Forrest's work has been consistently pigeon holed in a particular regional art historical movement - delineated by the ethos of the Emma Lake artists' workshops and the influence of the late American critic, Clement Greenberg. This exhibition reassesses Forrest's work against a backdrop of contemporary art; electronically generated work and socially motivated art. His sensuous paintings remind us of our continuing engagement with paint and canvas.
