Meditations on Place
Close, Patrick (1993)
The Regina-based photographer Patrick Close has been exhibiting his work since the mid-70s. Despite their traditional appearance, Patrick Close's photographs extend the culturally determined meaning of landscape and the photographic strategies that represent the landscape. The prints comprising this exhibition, dating from 1990 to the present, explore as subject the different topographies of Saskatchewan - from the spare, isolated tracts of southern short-grass prairie to the lush pastorality of the north central parklands. Close's intensive scrutiny of prairie foliage forces attention to the surface of the photograph. Perceptually, this frustrates the convention of seeing landscape as a distant vista.
