A bittersweet comedy about two young Native-Americans, Victor and Thomas, who leave their small town for an adventure in self-discovery.
Regina Selects is back! Judy Anderson selected the film’s Smoke Signals and Whale Rider, and you can read her introduction below!
It has been years since I have seen “Smoke Signals” and “Whale Rider,” even so, they still hold a place in my heart because they had a profound effect on me as a Nēhiyaw woman. I enjoyed everything about “Smoke Signals,” it was a humorous and emotional journey that got me thinking/feeling about my own absent father. In my BFA, I created two videos inspired by this movie: one driven by my absent father, and in the other one I used the song “John Wayne’s Teeth” from the soundtrack. Fun fact: I picked up a Bannock Power t-shirt that my oldest son stole, and then had autographed by Evan Adams.
I am at a loss to find the proper words to describe the fierceness/strength/beauty/gentleness of the main character in “Whale Rider.”
Judy Anderson is Nêhiyaw from Gordon First Nation, SK. Lately, she beads a lot. Her work is created with the purpose of honouring the people in her life and Indigenous intellectualizations of the world. She is an Associate Professor of Canadian Indigenous Studio Art in the Department of Art at the University of Calgary.
