Gerrard Debbington, protégé and brother-in-law of Vane Cynster has only one desire--to paint the seldom-seen gardens of Lord Tregonning's Hellebore Hall. Lord Tregonning will grant his wish, but first Gerrard must paint a portrait of the lord's daughter, Jacqueline. Gerrard is captivated by Jacqueline but discovers she is victimized by rumours suggesting she is a murderess.
