Along the road to freedom : Mennonite women of courage and faith
—Dirks, Ray, artist.
2017

Book

"Along the Road to Freedom: Mennonite women of courage and faith includes 26 full page story painting reproductions honouring women who brought, or attempted to bring, their children out of the former Soviet Union to peace and freedom in Canada. Most left during the chaotic aftermath that followed the Russian Revolution and as refugees during World War 2. Many left without husbands who had been killed or disappeared into Stalin's gulag. The paintings and following stories from the families of the women in the paintings recall the lives of often otherwise anonymous women whose roads to freedom involved much suffering, despair and loss. Yet the legacy of most of these women is one of thankfulness, even forgiveness. This book comes out of the Along the Road to Freedom exhibition which is touring Canada and the US. It was inspired by four now seniors who were child refugees in the 1940s. Their desire was to spark an exhibition and book which would honour their mothers and other women like them who led children to freedom in Canada out of the former Soviet Union."-- Provided by publisher.
