Vekrin and Arrica granted the power of Blue Fire, a versatile force that could illuminate, warm, and protect, but also wreak havoc as a formidable weapon. In contrast, Ell transformed her devotees into Nightdwellers, nocturnal beings with predatory features. This division led to animosity among the Citydwellers, who wield Blue Fire-empowered firelances behind protective walls, the Freefolk, nomads camping within Blue Fire barriers, and the Nightdwellers ruling the night with a penchant for killing ordinary humans. As sacred objects channeling Blue Fire are stolen, sworn enemies Petra, Amlinn, and Jin from the respective factions embark on a quest that converges on a collision course with the truth.
