A Footnote to Freedom : Reclaiming the Life and Legacy of a Black Battalion Soldier.

Book
One family's story of racism, redemption, and the long shadow of the Black Battalion. From an early age, we had learned about our papa, George Dixon, being one of six hundred men who served in the only Black battalion in Canadian history. Sadly, much of my knowledge of the story stopped there. No doubt it was very difficult for my father, or anyone in his generation, to tell the story without reliving the painful racism his father -- like so many others -- endured, and the shame they were taught to feel about being black bodies in 'a white man's world.' It has taken three generations to find the collective strength to bring to light the painful irony of their struggle, that these men had to fight their own country to fight for the freedom of others in a distant land. This is our family tale of his redemption.
