The fur trade in Canada to 1787
1986
Slide
This volume describes the origins of the fur trade on the eastern seaboard and traces its expansion inland across the Great Lakes region to the Great Plains. It outlines the two great fur trade transportation systems, one based on the St. Lawrence and the other on Hudson Bay, and how they converged and competed for the trade of the hinterland. The role of native people in the trade also is thoroughly documented.
