It is 1940 and England is at war. Harriet Vane, now Lady Peter Wimsey, flees with the children to the family's country estate. But no site is safe, particulary a county surrounded by airfields. The village buzzes with war preparations -- and then a girl is found dead in the street after an air-raid drill. The crowd first thinks she is the victim of enemy fire, but soon realizes she has been brutally murdered, and the killer is amongst them. Lord Peter, back from assignment abroad, joins Lady Harriet to find the murderer -- before they find another victim.
