E. J. Hughes restoration triumph over hard times
2009
DVD
Unexpectedly, while tearing down an old hotel in Nanaimo, workmen uncovered hidden behind a false wall a lost masterpiece by British Columbia's premier landscape artist, E. J. Hughes. This remarkable story describes his life and the 4,800 hour restoration project of the Lt. Malaspina Sketching the Malaspina Gallery wall mural by renowned art conservator Cheryle A. Harrison. This heroic-sized wall mural depicting B.C.'s Age of Discovery was covered up and hidden for over 40 years before being rediscovered. Incorporating story threads of the struggle E.J. Hughes had to live by his art and the development of Hughes's artistic style during his 70 year career, the documentary tells the story of the artist who forever changed the way we view coastal British Columbia. This is a remarkable, poignant human story of perseverance and creativity in the face of tragedy and hardship.
