Toby Holt is drawn into another battle of wits with the outlaw Ma Hastings and the renegade Indian Red Cloud as they try to ruin the lives of the new settlers in the Dakota Territory. He faces nearly impossible odds in trying to protect the settlers, appeasing friendly Indian tribes, keeping his family from falling apart, and stopping Ma Hastings who vows to kill him.
