In this workshop, you will explore Visible Mending with Arounna Khounnoraj of Bookhou. We all have that favourite pair of jeans or a well-loved sweater - no matter how baggy or worn they might become. In the movement against throw-away culture and fast fashion, learn how to pick up a needle and rediscover the forgotten techniques and the joy of mending. We will cover the technique of weave mending, seed stitch and scotch darning and learn different ways to patch woven fabrics from the front and back.
No previous experience is required. During the workshop please bring items to mend from a sweater, sock, cotton tee, jeans or pants. If you don't have anything to bring please use remnants to practice on.
Recommended Materials:
• garments to mend (sweater, jeans, cotton shirt, pants)
• a selection of remnant fabric to patch medium weight linen or cotton, denim can be used to patch jeans
• Darning needle (size 14–18) and sewing needle (embroidery needle no.5)
• Yarn no thicker than worsted weight (fingering or sport weight yarn is recommended)
• Sashiko thread in white or blue, or dmc perle cotton no. 12, embroidery cotton floss will also work
• Snips or scissors
• Darning mushroom (alternatives include a lightbulb, a ladle, or a smooth tennis-sized ball)
Please try to use what you already have on hand. If you already have the recommended materials, great! If you need the materials, please contact spitman@reginalibrary.ca by Wednesday November 5th to pick up a free materials kit. Materials kits are only available for residents based in Regina SK, on a first come first serve basis. Limited quantities available.

Arounna Khounnoraj is an artist, author and maker living in Canada, where she immigrated with her family from Laos at the age of four. Her education includes a master’s degree in fine arts in sculpture and ceramics, but it was through subsequent art residencies that she found her current focus in fibre arts with an emphasis on surface design techniques and textile printing. In 2002, she, along with her husband, John Booth, cofounded bookhou, a multidisciplinary studio where Arounna furthered her interest in screen printing and block printing as a means of translating her drawings onto fabric. Her use of natural materials, combined with her ever-expanding interest in various forms of stitchwork like embroidery and punch needle, gives her work all the qualities of handmade, slow design.
Arounna currently lives in Toronto and Montreal, Canada. Her work can be found at bookhou.com and on Instagram @bookhou
