Koyaanisqatsi comes from the Hopi word meaning "life out of balance." This renowned documentary reveals how humanity has grown apart from nature, and makes its points solely through imagery and music.

Shawna's Introduction:

Koyaanisqatsi is director Godfrey Reggio’s first film in the Qatsi film trilogy with Powaqqatsi following in 1986 and Naqoyqatsi in 2002. Koyaanisqatsi is a Hopi word that means life out of balance. The film was released in the 1982 the same year I was born yet I didn’t get to see until I was a teenager. There’s not much I can say about my experience other than I was utterly awestruck by the film and Philip Glass’s mesmerizing soundtrack. I feel the director himself best sums it up with this quote. “For some people, it’s an environmental film. For some, it’s an ode to technology. For some people, it’s a piece of s***. Or it moves people deeply. It depends on who you ask. It is the journey that is the objective. “ Godfrey Reggio

The film has reached cult status over the years and holds a whopping 90% score on rotten tomatoes which is pretty unheard of for an art film. The cinematographer Ron Fricke went on to make the films Baraka and Samsara which I also highly recommend people check out. I am so very excited to share with you the experience of Koyaanisqatsi on the big screen, truly how it’s meant to be seen!
