Born into a small French and Metis community in rural Saskatchewan, Joe Fafard rose to become one of Canada’s most enduring and successful artists. Faced with a devastating medical diagnosis, Joe sets out to complete two seminal works; a self portrait and a two-sided portrait of Vincent van Gogh. This highly personal and immersive film by Jan Nowina-Zarzycki, depicts the artist at work in his foundry, and as he visits several of his installations across Canada, revealing details about the formative years of his life, his views on humankind and the inspiration behind many of his most famous sculptures.

Jan Nowina-Zarzycki has worked as a freelancer in film and television in Poland and in Canada for more than 30 years. He has accumulated a wealth of experience as a writer, producer, director, line producer, picture editor and story editor on various projects from short experimental pieces to theatrical features. After making several more 8 and 16 mm films, Jan Nowina-Zarzycki began his professional filmmaking career as an Assistant then Unit Director on feature films and television series in Poland. Aside from the listed projects Jan Nowina-Zarzycki has worked on many more as a Screenwriter, Story Editor, Line Producer, Camera Operator, directing and producing a stage play, etc., both in Canada and his native Poland.

Mark Wihak’s work explores a range of approaches: dramatic writing and directing, experimental films, broadcast documentary and film-based installation. His films have been broadcast across Canada and programmed at the most prestigious film festivals in Canada and invited to festivals in the USA, Europe, India, Brazil and Australia.
