Discover your community

Libraries play a crucial role in building and sustaining vibrant communities. When you enter a library, you are entering a community within a community.

A library is a common gathering place that unites people and cultures. It represents a city’s character, its aspirations, and commitment to the future. It is a source of pride.

There is no typical day at the library.

  • There might be Indigenous dancers and drummers performing;
  • Or a counsellor offering free mental health supports;
  • Or a lawyer offering free legal advice.

There might be a screening of local filmmakers’ work, a local band recording a new song, or entrepreneurs learning how to start a business.

There are no typical library customers, but there are many reasons for visiting: many newcomers are pleased with the free resources available; families love our children’s activities; workers stop over lunch to pick up books; people stroll through our art gallery locations; some engage in healthy dialogue and debate; others simply enjoy the chance to be around people.

Libraries offer a physical space for people to gather, study, read, and work. Whether it’s bringing like-minded people together, or providing opportunities to learn from each other, the library is actively engaged in creating connections between people.

We invite you to visit any of our branches to discover more about your library. You might also be interested in the wide range of programs we offer at locations across the city.
