Mindy Yan Miller and Suzanne Miller’s commemorative durational performance starts from a list of 600 given names of Holocaust victims collected by Yad Vashem in the extensive and ongoing Pages of Testimony project. Mindy sits and sews onto a large pieced skirt, constructed from unwanted garments, adding her thoughts and labour, stitch by stitch as Suzanne wears the skirt and performs a series of embodied inscriptions, tracing each of the given names. Allan Paivio’s sound deploys whispers and song as the names punctuate and weave through an ambient industrial undertone, contrasted with the calls of songbirds.
Part of A Stitch and Time, a Generator project curated by Blair Fornwald and Wendy Peart, at Central Gallery from September 28 to November 3.
The artists would like to acknowledge funding by Concordia Part-time Union.
