Material Girls
Material Girls is about women taking up space. Featuring works by 25 Canadian and international emerging, mid-career, and senior female artists from across artistic disciplines and cultural backgrounds, Material Girls is an exploration of material process and notions of excess as they relate to the feminized body, gendered space, and desire. The artists' sumptuous, decorative, and visually overwhelming works provide a visceral and jubilant counterpoint to the modernist-derived and ideologically-constructed convention of the austere white cube.
The Material Girls catalogue features critical essays by the exhibition's three co-curators, a specially-commissioned artist project by Tricia Middleton, and 76 full-colour photographs.
Artists featured include: Morehshin Allahyari, Jaime Angelopoulos, Christi Belcourt, Katherine Boyer, Karin Bubaš, Andrea Carlson, Ying-Yueh Chuang, Alex Cu Unjieng, Raphaëlle de Groot, Abigail DeVille, Soheila Esfahani, Ran Hwang, Sarah Anne Johnson, Felice Koenig, Deirdre Logue, Rachel Ludlow, Jodie Mack, Amy Malbeuf, Sanaz Mazinani, Meryl McMaster, Tricia Middleton, Allyson Mitchell, Dominique Rey, Winnie Truong, and Marie Watt.
