Little Bird TV Series and the Sixties Scoop

Tansi,

The “Sixties Scoop” saw thousands of Indigenous children taken from their homes and families, placed in foster homes, and often adopted out to non-Indigenous families across Canada, the US, Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand between the 1950s - 1980s. This mass removal of Indigenous children from their families and cultural displacement caused deeply rooted identity issues which many survivors are still dealing with to this day.

When I was recently approached by a community partner to screen the award-winning TV series, Little Bird, my immediate reaction was YES! Screening this series provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the legacy of the Sixties Scoop, as well as of survivors’ resilience in the face of this trauma and loss.

The library is providing space for three local Sixties Scoop survivors to share their personal stories about how they reconnected with their birth families and their Indigenous roots following each screening.

The screening and talks take place on Nov 8, 15 and 22nd at 7pm in the RPL Film Theatre located in Central Library.

Can't make it? One of our librarians created a 60s Scoop booklist for anyone wanting to learn more.
