Pride Reading Roundup!

Books let us see through the eyes of others, to explore adventures, places, times, and – most importantly – perspectives outside our own experience. And they give us a jumping off point to start a conversation.

One of my favourite ways to introduce new concepts with my family is by reading together.

Listening to audiobooks like What’s Your Pronoun? Beyond He and She in the car with my husband gives us a chance to talk about our individual perspectives, and how we can approach discussing 2SLGBTQIA+ topics with our son. It gives us a chance to get on the same page about how we’re parenting.

Curling up with my son to read kids’ books about identity, like Red: A Crayon’s Story, leads us to really cool reflections about how we feel about ourselves, and how others might be feeling about themselves, and what empathy can do to help us make room for everyone.

Everyone’s story deserves to be told, and one way to support the gender and sexually diverse community during Pride Month (and all the other months!) is to listen to their voices.

Fortunately, the library has a whole roundup of reading to get us started!
