Yes, we do stuff like that

A lot has changed at RPL since I first started working here 10 years ago, but one thing has stayed the same: I’m constantly surprised by the programs we offer – and I’m not the only one.

I know this because nearly every conversation I’ve had about the library in the last decade has ended up sounding something like this:

Friend: “Wait. You’re doing what?”

Me: “Going to an intro to beekeeping program.”

Friend: “Like, with real bees? In the library?”

Me: “Maybe. The presenter’s bringing hive samples.”

Friend: “THAT’S SO COOL. I had no idea the library did stuff like that.”

It’s true: we do stuff like that all the time.

We’ve hosted food and drink tastings, DIY bicycle repair clinics, after-hours scavenger hunts, workshops on energy healing, interactive family storytimes, murder mystery games, and literally thousands of other unique programs.

Even now that we’ve moved most of our programs online, there’s some really cool stuff happening. Just this September, I watched an incredible live performance by musician Rae Spoon - in my living room. I can’t tell you how nice it was to experience live music again, without the extra stress that can come with going out these days.

Chances are, if you start digging into our website you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what you find. I mean, who expects to learn cross-country skiing or interior design, or find out about free mental health resources  … at the library?

If you’d like to get started with library programs, the best advice I can give you is to go exploring on our site. Try changing up the filters for different event types and topics, sort by age to see what’s available for your kids, or by location to find out what your neighbourhood branch has planned.
